Ayer fue un buen dia, no solo por que hicimos un pastel de chocolate con Julia, y que salió de fábula, si no por que tuve la oportunidad de reunirme con el gran Jose Luis Vicente. Se acercó a Vilanova con su hijo a jugar un partido de baloncesto.

Jose Luis es director de Ingeniería de Software en Lear Coorporation con alrededor de 170 ingenieros a su cargo (en España) y presidente de un club de Basket en Vall (Tarragona) que cuenta con 22 equipos.

Es un placer hablar con el y escuchar para aprender ya que de él he aprendido un montón de cosas.

We have received lots questions regarding the status and planning of the new version of Watts. Most of the people request a version compatible with the new retina display and other a better solution to some of the basic problems that the application had from the beginning.

As most of you already know, Watts was the first application of two Mac lovers that in their spare time work to cover a gap that they found on their daily usage of their computers. The application was a success and with the success comes lots of support requests. The success was not enough for stoping being a side project so the support filled our spare time and there was no time for any more development.

You have to think that at that moment in time we where experienced developers but not in Cocoa, this means that the implementation of Watts was not optimal and needs lots of tunings to add new features due to a limited architecture. Fortunately 3 years ago a went full time to be a Cocoa developer and this allowed me to improve my knowledge on the technology and help me find better solution to the problems we faced with Watts.

During the last years Jesus and I had some difficult time on our daily job which had a huge impact on the maintenance and support of Watts. The project is not dead at all but slow down due to our daily jobs and two kids each.

Current Status

Last fall I started to rewrite Watts completely from scratch. I enjoyed a lot doing that job and in several months working at nights and on the commute I had the algorithm and the basic functionality working. Unfortunately the beginning of the year working load in my current job reduced my time to minimum again. I really love the project and I would like to have the new version ready as soon as possible so I kept doing whatever I can to have it ready.

The new Watts adds to the previous functionality new fancy ways to look at your battery status and data and I hope it will fulfil most of the user needs. I’m very happy with the fact that the new architecture will allow us to add new functionality and graphics easily.

Planning

I can not say much about it. I’ll do my best to have it ready but as it is not my main project at all it is not right that I give a data that we may fail. I just can tell you that I love the tool and I want it to have it for me as well so I’ll do all possible to make it real.

But think that Watts will keep being a side project to work on spare time.

Ayer Viernes, fue el primero día de unas pequeñas vacaciones que me estoy tomando, y como mejor celebrarlo que comprando me un nuevo amplificador. Era la segunda vez que visitaba a los amigos de Rock Guitar Shop de Vilanova. La primera fue el pasado verano cuando lleve mi guitarra para una puesta a punto. El trato fue muy bueno y por eso decidí volver. En esta ocasión tuve la oportunidad de hablar con Ruben (que podéis ver en la foto).

Una de las cosas que me hizo volver a esta tienda es el material de tan alta calidad que tiene y por supuesto el trato humano, genial. Tenían en exposición como mínimo amplificadores Fender de edición limitada y eso se agradece, el blues Junior Gold, Hot Rod Silver y Excelsior. Para la oportunidad lleve mi guitarra e incluso mi cable (:-)). Aunque tenia ya bastante claro que me iba a llevar el Fender Blues Junior III, las cosas se tienen que probar. Conectamos y jugueteamos un rato con el amplificador en cuestión. Increíble de sonido con las mínimas prestaciones que se le puede pedir a estos cacharros. Pero del Amplificador os hablaré más adelante.
